How to print graph paper at the right size

Printed graph paper is only useful if the squares are the size you asked for. Most wrong-size prints come from one print setting, and the fix takes ten seconds.

Choose the right kind of grid

Square grid (graph paper) suits maths, plotting and technical sketches. A dot grid keeps the page clean for notes, lettering and bullet-journal layouts. Ruled lines are for handwriting. Isometric paper, which is made of triangles, is for drawing boxes and machines that look three-dimensional. The Grid Paper Generator offers all of these, plus a small-cross grid, on A3, A4, A5, B5, Letter and Legal paper in portrait or landscape.

Pick a spacing that fits the job

A 5 mm spacing is the classic graph-paper size and works for most schoolwork. Use 1 cm for large sketches or for children, 4 mm for dense engineering notes, and 7 to 8 mm for ruled writing. A thicker line every 5 lines makes counting squares easy. Very fine spacing on a large sheet is refused, because thousands of tiny lines would slow your browser down.

Print at 100 %, not “fit to page”

In the print dialog choose “Actual size” or “100 %” and turn off “Fit to page” or “Scale to fit”. Otherwise the printer may shrink the page slightly to make room for its own margins, and a 5 mm grid becomes about 4.7 mm. After printing, check with a ruler: ten squares of a 5 mm grid should measure exactly 5 cm.

PDF or PNG?

The PDF is a true vector file, so the lines stay sharp at any size and print exactly to the millimetre. The PNG is 300 dpi for the chosen paper size (an A4 sheet is 2480 × 3508 pixels), which is ideal for pasting into a document or a tablet note-taking app. If you only need to print, choose the PDF.

Keep your margins in mind

Home printers cannot print right to the edge of the paper; the unprintable strip is usually 3 to 6 mm. The generator keeps a 10 mm page margin by default, so the grid is not cut off. Raise it if you want to punch holes for a binder.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my printed grid smaller than expected?

The printer or the PDF viewer scaled the page. Print at “Actual size” or 100 % and switch off “Fit to page”.

Which paper size should I choose?

A4 outside North America, Letter in the US and Canada. A5 and B5 suit notebooks.

Can I make grid paper with a different line colour?

Yes. Pick any colour; light blue or grey keeps your pencil work readable.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The paper is drawn in your browser and nothing leaves your device.
