UUID generator

UUID v4 is 122 random bits, so the chance of a duplicate is negligible. UUID v7 (RFC 9562) starts with a millisecond timestamp followed by random bits, so new IDs sort after older ones — better for database indexes. The random part comes from crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure generator.

Frequently asked questions

Which version should I use?

v7 for database primary keys that benefit from ordering; v4 when the ID should reveal nothing about when it was created.

Can two UUIDs be the same?

In practice no: you would need billions of UUIDs per second for many years to expect a collision.

Are the UUIDs stored?

No. They are generated in your browser and not saved anywhere.
