How to use
- Choose an MP4, MOV or WebM video.
- Pick a quality, an optional maximum resolution, and whether to keep the sound.
- Press Compress video, wait for the progress bar, then compare the sizes and download the MP4.
Compress video
The video is decoded and encoded again as H.264 with a lower bitrate chosen from the output resolution and the original bitrate. Lowering the resolution (for example from 4K or 1080p to 720p) saves the most space. Sound in AAC is copied as-is; other audio is converted to AAC.
Re-encoding always loses a little quality, and a video that is already heavily compressed may not get smaller — the tool tells you when that happens. Encoding speed depends on your device: a few minutes of 1080p video usually takes about as long as it plays, or longer on phones. Files up to a few hundred MB are practical; very large files can run out of memory.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my video be?
It depends on the source. Phone recordings often shrink by half or more, especially with a lower resolution. Videos already optimised for the web may barely change.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Decoding and encoding run in your browser with WebCodecs; the file never leaves your device.
Why does it say my browser is not supported?
The tool needs WebCodecs with an H.264 encoder. Use a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. Some browsers also can't decode HEVC (H.265) or ProRes files.
Can it remove watermarks or download videos from websites?
No. It only processes files on your device, and you should only use videos you have the rights to.
